Immediate steps to take for rape victims

Rape is a deeply traumatic experience.

We are preparing this list as a guidance to victims and their families in the immediate aftermath of such viscious attack.

1. Ensure Safety – The first priority is to ensure that the victim is in a safe environment away from the perpetrator.

2. Seek Medical Attention – It’s crucial to seek immediate medical attention, even if there are no visible injuries. Do not shower, change clothes, or clean up in any way before going to the hospital. This can help preserve evidence that may be necessary for a criminal investigation. A medical examination can also help to assess and address the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), pregnancy, and any other physical injuries.

3. Contact Law Enforcement – In Bangladesh, you can dial 999 for emergencies. Report the crime to the police as soon as possible.

4. Preserve Evidence – As mentioned before, it’s important to preserve any physical evidence of the crime. Do not wash, change clothes, or clean up the location where the incident happened. All these elements can serve as vital evidence in the investigation and prosecution of the crime.

5. Document the Incident – Write down as much as you can remember about the incident, including descriptions of the perpetrator, location, time, and any other details. This can serve as a record to refer to when reporting to the police and during any subsequent court proceedings.

6. Seek Legal Assistance – Contact a lawyer to understand the legal process and your rights. They can provide guidance and support throughout the process.

7. Psychological Support – Reach out to a mental health professional or a counsellor who specializes in trauma. They can provide emotional support and help cope with the aftermath of the incident.

It’s crucial to remember that it’s not the victim’s fault, no matter the circumstances. It’s the responsibility of the legal system to ensure justice, and the responsibility of society to provide support and understanding to victims.
